Newsflash

Hitachi LTD has announced a 1 TB disk drive due out by 2007 that will feature perpendicular recording as a method for surmounting the limitations imposed on areal density by superparamagnetism.  Perpendicular recording aligns magnetic fields perpendicularly to media rather than in parallel, enabling bits to be squeezed more closely together without interfering with magnetic fields.

5 Myths of Distributed SRM Print E-mail
On February 10 at CA's Los Angeles offices, site editor Jon Toigo and CA consulting specialist Scott Howie presented their views of the continuing story of storage resource management in the distributed world. Now more than ever, Toigo argued, companies need to instrument their storage infrastructure for storage management. Toigo prefers the eventual integration of purpose-built storage platforms and services mounted on routers and gateways in a network (as opposed to being embedded on an array controller)via W3C Web Services standards. Until we get there, selecting and deploying a solid SRM product is our only and best hope for reigning in the Wild West of storage. Howie continued the theme with a discussion of CA's tools for managing storage.

Here is a ZIP you can download containing both Microsoft PowerPoint decks.
