Hitachi LTD has announced a 1 TB disk drive due out by 2007 that will feature perpendicular recording as a method for surmounting the limitations imposed on areal density by superparamagnetism. Perpendicular recording aligns magnetic fields perpendicularly to media rather than in parallel, enabling bits to be squeezed more closely together without interfering with magnetic fields.

Data inherits its hosting requirements like so much DNA from business processes and applications. Platform resources and services should be defined only after requirements are fully understood. One size fits most architecture never fits anyone's data well!

Containing costs and allocating storage capacity efficiently requires Storage Resource Management. You should prefer an SRM solution that gives you an application-centric view of storage infrastructure to ease troubleshooting. Standardize on an SRM product, then only buy platforms that can be managed with that product.

Storage "plumbing" alternatives are in no short supply. Every option has its value, and the right plumbing is the one that supports the data movement and access requirements that you are expecting. Choose wisely.

Eschew marketecture. Everyone in the storage industry is selling a box of hard disks. "Value add" software is a cost accelerator. Why not purpose-build storage to obtain exactly the right mix of capacity, performance and functionality that your data really needs? Consider placing value add functions into the network as shared services, not as proprietary on-array functions.

5 Myths of Mainframe SRM

If you missed the show at CA's Los Angeles offices in February, the morning covered our views of the myths that have perpetuated with respect to mainframe storage management. SMS and HSM did a great job and created some legendary capacity allocation and capacity utilization efficiency numbers that distributed storage infrastructure has yet to rival. Still, as Jon Toigo stated in his presentation, times have changed and IBM can't rest on its mainframe storage management laurels for much longer -- especially given the rise of smarter storage components, specialty storage functions (such as encryption and de-duplication), and IBM's own saw about virtualizing x86 servers in LPARs.
